Kep
Kep was established by the French in 1908 as a colonial beach resort, and by the 1960s it had become a popular holiday destination for Cambodian tourists. Unfortunately it was largely devastated during the civil war and the Khmer Rouge regime, and most of the old French colonial buildings were damaged or destroyed. In the years after the war, Kep fell in neglect, but now it is having a rebirth of sorts. This is mainly due to its great seaside location, and by the establishment of new businesses. While it is gaining in popularity, it is still a pleasant, peaceful and quiet little town.
The beach at Kep consists of a sandy crescent about 1 km long of sand near the end of the Kep Peninsula. There are seafood vendors on the road behind the beach, and the beach can be quite busy on the weekends, but not many people there during the week.
Rabbit Island is a small, remote island located offshore from Kep. The island has secluded white sand beaches fringed with coconut trees, and fairly clear and warm waters. It offers great snorkel amid the rocks, and there are many fish, but no coral. There are rustic bungalows on the island for overnight stay, and there are a few basic restaurant-bar combinations. You can arrange a trip to the island through your guesthouse or travel agent, or by going to the boat dock in Kep next to Long Villa where boats are usually available.
