This is a busy little town for a couple of reasons. It is a stopover place for people going by road between Phnom Penh and Champasak and Pakxe in southern Laos. It is also the place to see the rare and endangered Irrawaddy Dolphin inhabiting the Mekong River. Some say that Kratie has some of the best Mekong River sunset viewing in Cambodia, and the best place to see the sunset is from the top of Phnom Sambok.
Kratie is, of course, is a riverside town and it has a large waterfront, but it was also a French- colonial river port and much French-colonial architecture still remains. It somehow escaped the bombing during the war that devastated many other provincial towns. History has it that it was one of the first towns to be so-called ‘liberated’ by the Khmer Rouge.
