Preah Vihear
The province of Preah Vhear, located in the north of Cambodia, is one of the least populated provinces in Cambodia. One of the most popular tourist attractions in the province is the Preah Vihear Temple, located near the border with Thailand. In Thai, the temple is called Prasat Khao Phra Wiharn. Other well known ancient temples in the province are the Koh Ker Temple Complex and Preah Khan Temple (aka Prasat Bakan).
Sitting atop a mountain, The Preah Vihear Temple was constructed in the late 9th century to the mid 12th century. It is a magnificent temple complex, and has a spctacular view of the surrounding countryside. The temple itself is a rather long and narrow set of structures rising up the mountain, and displays unique artistic and architectural design elements.
The region of Preah Vihear is not well developed, and access to the temple is not easy. A trip to the temple from Siem Reap will require at least a 2-day trip there and back. It can also be reached from Kompong Thom, or through Oddar Meanchey Province, or from Stung Treng. However some routes are advisable to for use only during the dry season. Preah Vihear Province has abundant natural treasures with dense forest and scrub vegetation, and is ideal for those who love nature and is becoming a popular destination for trekking.
