Svay Rieng
Svay (pronounced Swai) Rieng is another small and sleepy lowland Cambodian province. However, like Prey Veng, the busy National Highway No 1, linking Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam runs through the province. This is also one of the poorest provinces in Cambodia, and most of the people make only a subsistence living by farming and fishing.
The provincial capital, Svay Rieng, is of course a sleepy town, but it has something going for it, it is just 43 km from the Bavet border crossing with Vietnam (see below). The border trade traffic has made this a fairly prosperous place, with all manner of travelers and business people passing trough. It is an ok overnight stopover place if needed when traveling from, or going to Vietnam.
The town is near the Waiko River, and there are some scenic marshlands, which are caused stretches of the river drying up over the years. Most of the province has arable land with rice fields and agricultural plantations. The southeast part of the province protrudes into Vietnam, and is surrounded by Vietnam on three sides.
There was heavy fighting in the province during the Vietnam War, and the province was heavily bombed by the Americans. The result of this destruction is no forests and a cratered countryside.
