Oudomxay
Oudomxay is a mountainous province in the north of Laos, bordering four other northern provinces, and a small part of China. It has 23 distinct ethnic groups with their own culture, language and colorful traditional attire. There are many Chinese workers in the province, as well as traders from Kunming. It has a fair road system compared to other northern provinces.
The provincial capital, Muang Xai, is a bustling China - Laos trading center, and is at the junction 3 main routes. It is a medium sized, and somewhat nondescript town, which is probably one reason for it not receiving many visitors. However, almost everyone traveling south to Luang Prabang, or north from Luang Prabang, will pass through Oudomxay. The population is approx. 60% Lao, and 25% Chinese.
What To Do
Another reason why Oudomxay doesn’t have a horde of tourists is its decided lack of attractions. However, there are one-day treks to the Tat Lak Sip Et Waterfall and Muang La, and 3-day treks and home-stays to Khamu villages. There are also 2 to 5-day cycling and trekking tours in and around the province.
When To Go?
Like other northern provinces, a good time to visit is in the cool season, from Oct. to March. Of course, warm clothing is the order of the day. However, the rainy season (May to October) is a beautiful time of year to visit, but when trekking, mud and leeches can be a problem.
