Da Nang Travel Guide
Da Nang was called “Tourane” by the French during their colonial rule, and some hotels still use that in their name. It was also used as a staging area by the French during their war in Vietnam, and when they built a garrison on the Son Tra Peninsula, more French soldiers died from disease during its construction, than died from fighting.
Those who know about the Vietnam War will remember Da Nang as the location of a large American military and navel base. At one point, it actually housed up to one fifth of all U.S. service personnel in Vietnam, and was a transit point and R&R location for many U.S. soldiers. It was a very heavily defended city, but when the end came in 1975, it was taken over by the North Vietnamese. Now cyclos pedal along the tree-lined streets at a leisurely pace.
In fact, Da Nang has been on leisurely pace for many years. However, recently new construction has been springing up, with new apartment buildings and shopping malls being built along the riverfront. Some of the main streets have been widened, and it seems that demolition crews, tearing down old buildings, and construction crews building new ones, are hard at work.

What To See & Do
Most people who go to Da Nang are just passing through on the way to Hoi An. However, there are actually things to see and do in Da Nang, and one of the most famous tourist attractions is China Beach. This beautiful, sun drenched beach was made famous by GIs on R&R during the war.
But in addition to China Beach, Da Nang also has other attractions like the Cham Museum, and a large Cao Dai Temple. It also has a nice waterfront boulevard, and as mentioned above, wide tree-lined streets. And it offers some excellent restaurants and watering-holes, and nightspots.
The area around Da Nang has attractions such as Marble Mountain, Monkey Mountain, the Ba Na Hill Station, and further to the south, the ancient ruins at My Son.
Some visitors to Da Nang may find it is not as exciting as other places. But with a little effort you can experience the best that Da Nang has to offer. Doing a little digging and research before you go will be well worth it in terms of finding the hidden gems of Da Nang.
