Dong Hoi Travel Guide
Dong Hoi is the capital of Quang Binh Province, and is approximately half way between Vinh and Hue on the coast. The main attraction here is the Phong Nha Cave, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
What To Do
Quang Binh Province has many sand dunes and beaches of which Da Nhay Beach and Ly Hoa Beach (60 km north of the city) are the most popular. However, by far the biggest draw of Dong Hoi is the Phong Nha Cave. This is a spectacular cave complex used by North Vietnam as a field hospital during the war.
When To Go
Springtime in Dong Hoi is cool, humid and foggy with an average temperature from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius. Summers are hot and dry with temperatures reaching as high as 35 degrees Celsius. It is rainy in the fall, but temperatures are comfortable in the 25 to 30 degrees Celsius range. In the winter, it may be rainy and cold with temperatures down to 12 degrees Celsius.
The best time to visit Quang Binh Province and Phong Nha Cave is in the dry season, between February and April when the weather is cool and there is no flooding.
Travel Tips
From November to December, travelers should check the travel conditions in the area. This is because during this period, the river is prone to flooding, and the Phong Nha Cave may be closed.
