What To Do
For exploring the center of the city, you should start at the colonial quarter around Dien Bien Phu Street and Tran Hung

Dao Street. From there, you can go to the old Opera House, and take a walk around Tam Bac Lake. Near the lake is the Hang Kenh Tapestry Factory, founded in 1929 by two French businessmen. The factory is well-known for its hand-made woolen carpets that are the best quality in Vietnam, and they are still hand-made in the traditional way.
There are actually some remarkable ancient sites in Hai Phong. Du Hang Temple, the center of Buddhism in Hai Phong, is a very graceful temple built in the 17th century. However, the temple has undergone several renovations in later periods. The temple contains many woodcarvings, bronze statues and a bonsai collection in the front grounds. An array of Buddha and Bodhisattva statues surround a circular pond with water lilies in a flowery garden. There is also a tranquil cemetery where monks of the temple are buried.
Not far from this temple is Hang Kenh Pavilion, which is dedicated to the 10th century Vietnamese hero, Ngo Quyen. It was the communal house of the Kenh Village in the old days, and has wooden bas-relieves, sculptures and an unusual boat-shaped interior.
