Hue Travel Guide
Located in central Vietnam, Hue is the ancient imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802 – 1945). It is Vietnam's main cultural, religious and educational center. The Hue Imperial Palace was recognized as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1993, and Hue Royal Music was declared as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003. The Perfume River bisects the city of Hue with the city on one side and the remains of the Imperial Palace on the other.
What To See & Do The City of Hue and the surrounding area is rich in ancient cultural heritage sites. These include the Imperial City, the Forbidden Purple City, and the Dong Ba Market in the city, and the royal tombs, and the Thien Mu Pagoda in the area. Most all of the important historical sites in Hue can be seen in two days.
Also from Hue, there are day-trips to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the Vinh Moc Tunnels, and Bach Ma National Park.
You can take a boat cruise on the Perfume River to the Thien Mu Pagoda, one of the best-known pagodas in Vietnam. It is an active Buddhist temple, but its origins date back to 1601. Then you can continue the boat trip on the river to the majestic and scenic tomb of the Emperor Minh Mang.
Also, dinner cruises on the river are an enchanting way to see the city, and royal emperor Hue-style cuisine is an experience not to be missed.
When To Go The best time to visit Hue is from March to August, and in particular in March and April when temperatures are cooler, and there is only a slight chance of rain. The rainy season is from September to January, and rains can be heavy and frequent.
Travel Tips
Except for the Imperial Palace, most of the city's major sites are not within walking distance from the city center. It is best to arrange a tour by boat, vehicle or motorbike with a travel agent. Cycling is also an optional way to see sites around the city.
Unfortunately, there are few remnants of the war and not much left to see at the DMZ. But if you are interested in the history of the war, you will need to go with a tour guide who can provide historical background.
For exploring the Vinh Moc Tunnels, it is advisable to bring along an umbrella and a flashlight.
