Lai Chau Travel Guide
Lai Chau Province is in the northern high mountainous region, and borders Yunnan Province (China) on the north, Laos on the west, Lao Cai Province on the north-east, and Dien Bien and Son La Provinces on the south. The town of Lai Chau is about a 3-hour drive from Dien Bien Phu, and is a stopping place for lunch, or an overnight stop for people traveling between Dien Bien Phu and Sapa.
What To Do
There are some attractions in Lai Chau, which include the colorful Sunday Market at Sin Ho Village, the Montagnard village of Tam Duong, along with other tourist sites such as the Tien Son Cave, and the Muong Lai Spring.
When To Go
Even though it is in the north, Lai Chau is in a tropical monsoon zone, and there are two seasons; the rainy season and the dry season. In the summer it can be one of the hottest places in Vietnam, with June and July temperatures reaching 40 Degree Celsius. During the rainy season the town is affected by flooding from the Da River. The best time to visit Lai Chau is from September to April.
Travel Tips
The route from Dien Bien Phu through Lai Chau to Sapa, has some really breathtaking scenery, and the road between Lai Chau and Sapa is said to be one of the most beautiful drives in Vietnam. However, it is very rough, and can suffer from flooding and washouts during the rainy season, and delays are not uncommon.
