Lao Cai Travel Guide
Located in the far north of Vietnam, Lao Cai Province

borders the provinces of Ha Giang, Yen Bai, and Son La in Vietnam, and also borders the province of Yunnan in China. It is a very mountainous region, and much of the province has thick forests. In the northwest part of the province is the highest mountain in Vietnam, Phan Xi Pang (also called Fansipan). Flowing from China, the Red River runs through the province, and some of the most spectacular views of the Red River can be seen in Cao Bang. Temperatures in the province generally range from 18°C to 28°C.
Ethnic Villages
The population of Lao Cai Province has a number of ethnic groups, including the Hmong, Tay and Dao peoples. Trekking or hiking to ethnic villages for the day or for home-stay is a great experience. You learn about the culture and traditions and way of life of the people, while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings.

Travel Tips
For trekking or hiking in this part of the country, hiring a trained guide is essential. Even if you are an experienced mountaineer, it is easy to get lost, and accidents can happen. You can also hire a porter to carry your gear. Nights can get very cold, and can dip below freezing. Sleeping bags need to be rated accordingly.
