Nha Trang Travel Guide
Nha Trang is the capital of Khanh Hoa Province, and is perhaps Vietnam's most popular beach resort. The town itself is in a beautiful location, with rice fields all around and a range of mountains as a backdrop. The beach is almost a perfect sand beach, going for some 6km along the bay, and most of the time the ocean here is a bright aquamarine color. Some say this energetic coastal city is the best city beach resort in Vietnam.
What To See & Do
Of course visitors come here for the beautiful sand beach, but also for, what can be said is, the best nightlife in Vietnam outside of Saigon. The city is a great place for backpackers and budget tourists, with many bars, and where parties can go on until late at night. The street food in Nha Trang is great, and fresh BBQ lobster is a real treat. Seafood is a Nha Trang specialty.
There are 5-star resorts and hotels along the seafront street of Tran Phu, and more high-rise hotels are going up. There does not seem to be any slowdown in the rapid growth of this area.
For water sports, the swimming and snorkelling are great, and there are many boat trips to nearby islands, and bay cruises. Nha Trang is a first-class location for diving in Vietnam, with an underwater visibility of 15 to 20m, or more, and a variety of marine life. There are some thirty dive sites in Nha Trang Bay and in the surrounding ocean, and several dive shops in the city providing services to divers. There is also a private island resort called Vin Pearl.
Besides water sports and relaxing on the beach, there are other interesting things to do in the city and the area around Nha Trang. There is the Ba Ho Waterfall, the Cham Tower, the Long Son Pagoda, and mineral mud baths. From Nha Trang you can get out and explore more distant locations such as Whale Island and Jungle Beach. Even the Central Highlands are not that far away, and Buon Ma Thuot can be reached from here.
Getting There
Nha Trang is in the south of Vietnam, approx. 450km north of Ho Chi Minh City. From there, it takes around seven hours to get there by train, or only 45 minutes away by air.
Conclusion
Nha Trang has something for everyone. From 5-star luxury hotels, to family vacations, to budget places for backpackers, to the energetic bar scene in the evenings, everyone can enjoy this beach resort. Of course the long sandy beach and the cobalt-blue ocean is free for rich and poor, young and old to enjoy.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, Nha Trang is not yet Pattaya, but it seems to be well on its way.
