Located in the Gulf of Thailand right next to Cambodia, Phu Quoc Island is only a 20 minute flight from Rach Gia, or only a 1 hour flight from Saigon. It is largely unspoiled and has white sand beaches, jungle, azure-blue waters, and almost the entire length of the west coast of the island is one long beach. Development has affected only a small part of the island, and it is surprising that the island hasn't been further developed.
Of course there are many islands in Southeast Asia with similar attributes, but with its combination of isolated and unspoiled beaches, and the few unpolluted Vietnamese towns, Phu Quoc is a real gem of a destination.
It seems that the Vietnamese government has plans for more development, but so far they have not been implemented. And for future visitors lucky enough to find this little corner of paradise, these plans need to remain on the shelf forever.
What To See & Do
The island has more than a dozen bays and pristine sandy beaches, the interior is covered in jungle, and there are a small number of fishing villages. Phu Quoc is ideal for travelers who just want to kick-back and relax, and it is especially popular with couples. If you like, you can explore the island by motorbike and a map. Most beaches are open to the public, but some beaches are closed by the military.
There is a lot to do here, and the island has something for everyone. And once you are here, you will probably want to stay longer than you had planned.
